Refuge Canada

Activities

There are two types of activities: Package Activities and Object Activities.

Package Activities are project-based activities designed to accommodate one or more classes. These activities involve the use of historical thinking concepts while exploring the whole package, resulting in a more comprehensive experience.

Object Activities are short inquiry-based activities that typically take 5–25 minutes. These activities encourage students to think critically about the objects being presented, and to use historical thinking concepts.

Both types of activities were created with the guidance of educators from across Canada, and incorporate current educational theory and approaches.

Refuge Canada is an exhibition that first opened in Halifax in March 2018. It examines the experiences of refugees who have arrived in Canada, as well as Canada’s record in responding to waves of refugees from the early 20th century to the present day. The exhibition explores the following themes: life in their original homeland, fear, displacement, refuge and life in Canada.

Developed as a final project at the Historical Thinking Summer Institute, this interactive and thought-provoking educational program brings components of Refuge Canada into the classroom. It also invites students to apply historical thinking skills to this driving question: Is Canada’s response to refugees something of which I can be proud?
