Canadian film and television performers Frédéric Pierre and Schelby Jean-Baptiste talk candidly about their careers, and how to create a more diverse and open playing field for actors of colour.

Frédéric Pierre is a seasoned and versatile performer. A familiar face and voice to many, he has appeared in television, film and onstage for more than 30 years. At home both in front and behind the camera, he has earned accolades for drama and comedy, including the 2021 Prix Gémeaux for Best Production — Humour for Bye bye 2020. In 2022, he directed Une fois c’t’un Noir… a documentary that looks back on the evolution of, and key moments in, Black humour in Quebec. That same year, he won the Prix Icône Dynastie for his inspiring journey, and his commitment to creating a more representative film and television industry.

Schelby Jean-Baptiste is known for her work in the long-running television series Unité 9 and the acclaimed film, Scratch. In 2021, she began co-hosting Pa’t’mentir, a project which she also created and co-writes. The show deconstructs stereotypes and explores issues affecting Black and multi-ethnic communities in Quebec. In 2022, she was recognized by the entertainment. industry with the Prix Gémeaux Emerging Artist award.

This conversation, moderated by Naadei Lyonnais, launches the museum’s celebration of Black History Month, and reflects upon the opportunities and barriers faced by Black performers in Canadian film and television. Join us for a wide-ranging virtual discussion as they kick back in the exhibition From Pepinot to PAW Patrol® – Television of Our Childhoods.

“An Evening with” encourages open dialogue at the Canadian Museum of History. The series welcomes top experts and personalities in history, politics, the media, sports, and the arts, exploring various issues within the context of a moderated discussion.

This event is presented in French, with simultaneous English interpretation.
