Uncovering the Hidden Histories of Palestinian Amulets in the Museum’s Collection
How do we uncover the hidden histories of 19th-century objects in museum collections? What secrets are sealed inside Palestinian talismans? And what forms of protection or spiritual power are they believed to hold?
Join Saeedeh Niktab Etaati, Curator of Diasporas and Multinational Communities, and a member of the Conservation team, for a look into the Canadian Museum of History’s collection of Palestinian amulets. Through a combination of anthropological research, scientific analysis such as X ray imaging, and collaboration with other museums, this interdisciplinary project reveals how these objects were made, used and passed down across generations — and how their meanings continue to evolve within diasporic communities today.
