Foundation of the Canadian Museum of History and Canadian War Museum

A legacy of support, a future of possibility

Together, we can ensure Canada’s diverse stories are preserved, shared and experienced for generations to come.

A new, independent charitable foundation has been established to strengthen philanthropic and corporate support for the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum. The Foundation will connect donors and corporate partners with meaningful opportunities to advance the priorities of both Museums and contribute to their long-term sustainability.

A new chapter in supporting the Museums

The Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum preserve and share the stories of the people, events and experiences that have shaped the nation, helping people across Canada deepen their understanding of our shared history, identity and values.

Both Museums have ambitious plans to create meaningful experiences that reflect Canada’s diverse histories, cultures and perspectives, reach broader audiences, embrace new technologies, and offer innovative ways to engage with our past and imagine our future.

Philanthropic support plays a pivotal role in bringing these ambitions to life. The Museums recognize the many individuals, organizations and corporate partners whose support has helped advance their work over the years. Donor generosity has helped bring collections, exhibitions and learning experiences to audiences across Canada.

The Foundation will build on these longstanding relationships with deep appreciation for the community of supporters who have made so much possible. It will be responsible for fundraising on behalf of both Museums.

Meet the inaugural President

Cherry Marshall

Cherry Marshall is a bilingual development executive with more than a decade of experience advancing philanthropy across the education, not-for-profit, and arts sectors. She joins the Foundation from Concordia University, where she served as Associate Vice-President, Development, following a series of progressively senior fundraising roles over nine years.

At Concordia, Marshall helped lead the successful completion of the University’s largest fundraising campaign, which raised $365 million against a $250-million goal. Her experience includes securing significant philanthropic investments, leading high-performing development teams, and directing fundraising strategies across annual, planned, major and principal giving.

Marshall is known for translating institutional and curatorial priorities into compelling donor opportunities and using data-informed approaches to strengthen fundraising performance and donor engagement. She also brings national campaign, partnership, and stakeholder-relations experience from previous roles with Trans Canada Trail and Food Banks Canada.

As inaugural President, Marshall will lead the development of the Foundation and its philanthropic activities in support of the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum.

Expand access and learning

Help more families, students and communities experience the Museums and engage with their programs, both on site and across the country.

Create innovative Museum experiences

Support new spaces, programs, and digital experiences that connect Canada’s past with the possibilities of today.

One foundation supporting two national museums

The Foundation is a separate charitable organization established to generate philanthropic and corporate support for the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum.

The Foundation and the Museums share a commitment to preserving, exploring and sharing Canada’s history for present and future generations.

The Canadian War Museum will continue its longstanding relationship with the Friends of the Canadian War Museum. For more than 20 years, this dedicated group of volunteers has provided valued support to the War Museum. The Museum looks forward to continuing this relationship alongside the new Foundation.

Looking ahead

Cherry Marshall will begin her role as President in January 2027.

The Museums and the Foundation look forward to keeping donors and supporters informed about the Foundation’s work and opportunities to support both Museums.
