Staking Futures Together: Ancient Indigenous Games (Gambling) and Community Ties
Could the incredible sporting events we enjoy today be part of the immense cultural legacy shared by North America’s Indigenous Peoples?
Gaming events that played village against village and nation against nation were no less popular across the continent a millennium ago than they are today. Gaming objects have been found in astonishing numbers at a few archaeological sites across North America. These games tell an important story of who was playing games against whom, and why.
Join Dr. Gabriel Yanicki, Curator, Western Archaeology, in looking at North America’s largest-known collection of ancient Indigenous games, featured in the Canadian Museum of History mini-exhibition Staking Futures Together, and find out how games have always brought people together.
