The Sons of Membertou Concert

Join us for an album launch with the Mi’kmaw group, Sons of Membertou. This concert celebrates the re-issue of the group’s album Wapna’kik: The People of the Dawn, which combines traditional drums with the contemporary sounds of some of Cape Breton’s finest musicians. With this re-issue, the landmark album — considered instrumental in revitalizing Mi’kmaw music and culture upon its initial release in 1995 — will become available via streaming and digital platforms for the first time. Wapna’kik will be released on the Smithsonian Folkways record label, as well as by Sound Communities. Produced in collaboration with the Centre for Sound Communities at Cape Breton University, this new series highlights under-represented voices and communities across the country.
