LOOK

Look at where Harry, Valerie’s brother, is standing in this photo. What might his location tell you about their relationship and how he supported her athletics?

THINK

Why do you think Valerie called her brother “this angel on my shoulder”? What might this mean?

Can you think of mentors in your life who support you and the development of your hobbies or interests?

DO

John Howard, Valerie and Harrys grandfather, was also a track and field athlete, and represented Canada in the 1912 Olympics. He was the first Black athlete to compete for Canada. Put yourself in Grandfather John’s shoes when he was preparing to go to the Olympics. Can you think of some advice he might have given his grandchildren on becoming a successful athlete, physically and mentally?
