“More Than a Game” – Black Sports Figures in the 20th and 21st Centuries

Video excerpt of P.K. Subban

Video

Transcript

There was, you know, a team that I had an interview with and I went to the draft and they asked me, they’re like, “You know, why should we draft you?” And I said, “Well, you know, I think that I could be a player that comes in, that plays here for a long time, that can help this team win a championship.

And this is an organization that struggles to get fans, and I think that being a Black hockey player coming in and being someone who can have an impact on the ice but also can have an impact off the ice in helping potentially bringing more fans into the building and helping grow the game.”

And the response back to me was, you know, “We don’t recognize, you know, colour. We don’t recognize that you’re Black.” Like, we’re going to evaluate you as a hockey player.

And I, I just thought that that was that was wrong for-for so many different things, reasons. And I’ll tell you why. You know, obviously you’re being drafted based on how you play, but you have to recognize that I’m a Black hockey player.

LOOK

Watch this video excerpt. P.K. Subban is asking for support from his coaches if a racist incident occurs on or off the ice. Do you think this is a fair request for Subban to make? Why or why not?

THINK

Have you ever been on a team with a coach? Can you think of an experience with a coach that helped you to either develop one of your strengths or improve in a challenging area?

What words would you use to describe someone who coaches with compassion?

DO

Colour-blindness is the belief that ignoring racial and ethnic differences can create racial harmony. The video excerpt highlights the danger of people in power not seeing colour. Colour-blind mindsets can result in people not knowing how to effectively treat and support minority players if a racist incident occurs.

Talk with a partner about the pros and cons of coaches adopting a colour-blind approach with athletes.
