Explorations

To find "new land" was the mission of the Northern Party of the CAE. Vihjalmur Stefansson, the "Commander," was to explore north of Alaska and the Canadian mainland and beyond the known islands of the western Arctic. Drifting on moving ice floes, driving dog teams, or sailing small schooners during the short summer season of open water, the Northern Party covered many thousands of kilometers of lands never seen before, even by the Inuit.
