    The udu consists of a ceramic pot with a hole in the side. The musician alternately covers the top and side openings with the palms of the hands, producing sound through the compression and release of air inside the pot.

    The udu is thus an aerophone, as air is the element that vibrates and resonates. This type of instrument is found in Nigeria, mostly among the Ibos.

    When Martin Breton received an order for an udu in 1983, he built it according to an instrument that had been brought to Quebec by an African troupe of performers.
