The Dinner Service

 

The Cabot Commemorative State Dinner Service is an eight course service with 24 place settings.

Soup Plates

The soup plates are of bone china, the blanks produced by Doulton & Co. of Burslem, Staffordshire, England, and each has a circular shallow bowl with a scalloped rim. Each plate is painted with a "Historic Landscape of Canada," within a painted border of a gilt scroll and trellis design; the heraldic shield of the province depicted is incorporated into the gilt-painted rim design. This rim design was approved by the Ceramic Committee of the Women's Art Association of Canada.

Fish Plates

The fish plates are of bone china, the blanks produced by Doulton & Co., of Burslem, Staffordshire, England. The plates are circular with a scalloped rim. Each plate is painted with designs of fish, shells and seaweeds from Canada's seas, rivers and lakes, within a painted border of a gilt scroll and trellis design.

Dinner Plates

The dinner plates (or meat plates) are of bone china, the blanks produced by Doulton & Co. of Burslem, Staffordshire, England. The plates are circular with a scalloped rim. Each plate is painted with a "Historic Landscape of Canada," within a painted border of a gilt scroll and trellis design; the heraldic shield of the province depicted is incorporated into the gilt-painted rim design.

Game Plates

The game plates are of bone china, the blanks produced by Doulton & Co. of Burslem, Staffordshire, England. The plates are circular with a scalloped rim. Each plate is painted with a different Canadian game bird, and plants from the habitat of each bird are painted on the border; the rim is edged with small, stylized maple leaf motifs.

Salad Plates

The salad plates are of bone china, the blanks produced by Doulton & Co. of Burslem, Staffordshire, England. The plates are circular with a scalloped rim. Each plate is painted with a different Canadian fern within a painted border of a gilt scroll and trellis design.

Cheese Plates

The cheese plates are of bone china, the blanks produced by Doulton & Co. of Burslem, Staffordshire, England. The plates are circular with a scalloped rim. Each plate is painted with a Canadian songbird within a painted border of a gilt scroll and trellis design.

Dessert Plates

The dessert plates are dishes of bone china, blanks supplied by Doulton & Co. of Burslem, England. The dishes are shallow with indented, moulded edges. Each dish is painted with a different wild or cultivated fruit of Canada.

Coffee Cups and Saucers

Twenty-four coffee cups and saucers are of bone china, the blanks produced by Doulton & Co. of Burslem, Staffordshire, England. The cups are lobed with scroll handles and the saucers are lobed. Each cup and saucer is painted with wild flowers of Canada, and has a gilt rim and handle.

Twelve coffee cups and saucers are Limoges. These coffee cups are straight-sided, with a ring handle, and the saucers are circular.
