Cape Mudge House Posts

Photo: Steven Darby; CMC S94-13712, CD94-744-16 These two house posts come from the Kwakwaka'wakw village of Cape Mudge on Quadra Island. Both poles represent the same figures: Raven at the top and Beaver below. The wings on the two birds are distinct from each other, as are the faces painted on their breasts. The Beaver on the right is easily identified by his prominent front teeth, characteristic stick held in his mouth, and his tail at the base. The Beaver on the left, however, has lost his teeth, stick and tail.
