Audio recordings, like films and videos, can be an incredibly useful window into the past. As a type of historical evidence, “audio” applies not only to recordings of music and interviews, but also to oral histories shared between communities and individuals. For historians, these are equally important pieces of primary source evidence. Similarly to films and videos, historians must think critically about how, when and by whom audio has been produced. Understanding the historical context to audio evidence is crucial.
