Women Speak Up: The Right to Vote

Buy Tickets

Women faced an uphill battle for the right to vote in Canada — hear about their (literal) trials and tribulations.

We take it for granted today, but a hundred years ago, Canadian women were fighting hard for the right to vote. In her French presentation, Dr. Denyse Baillargeon of the Université de Montréal explores the particular challenges Québécois women faced. In her English presentation, Dr. Tarah Brookfield of Wilfrid Laurier University — author of Our Voices Must Be Heard: Women and the Vote in Ontario (available for sale and signing) — details the inspiring journey of Ontario women to the ballot box. In conjunction with Women’s History Month and Persons Day, and marking 100 years since certain women obtained the right to vote in Canada, the two talks take a fascinating look at the turbulent years of women’s suffrage.
