The Roots of an Elusive Andean Identity: A Brief Cultural History

Plan Your Visit

In celebration of the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages, the Embassy of Ecuador invites you to an engaging lecture by Ecuadorian historian Dr. Enrique Ayala Mora. Due to a colonial past and complex historical and social dynamics, the notion of “identity” in Latin America, and more specifically in Ecuador, is a phenomenon that portrays a diverse society in which the European and the indigenous ancestry collide and fuse in a global context. Dr. Ayala Mora will reflect on these matters and provide some key interpretative perspectives on such relevant and fascinating topic.

Dr. Ayala Mora received his Doctor of Education at the Catholic University of Ecuador, his MA in History at the University of Essex, and his PhD in History at Oxford University. He is currently Professor of Latin American History at the Simón Bolívar Andean University, Ecuador, of which he was founder and chancellor from 1996 to 2017. Dr. Ayala Mora is President of El Colegio de America, has published 28 books and edited another 15 on the history of Ecuador and Latin America.
