Convinced that the Fox were conspiring with the British and the Iroquois, the French
attacked them in 1712. In the years that followed, the Fox fiercely opposed French trade
with the Sioux. The organization of several military campaigns by French troops in 1716,
1728, 1730 and 1734 finally led to a lasting peace in 1738. During the conflict, though,
several nations that had been traditional allies of the French revised their position.
Among them were the Sauk and the Kickapoo, who did not look favourably upon the
intransigence of the French with regard to the Fox.
