South of the Great Lakes, the French came into contact with nations of the Algonquian family, whose way of life differed from that of the northern Algonquians. The southern Algonquians consisted of the Illinois, the Shawnee, the Miami, the Potawatomi, the Menominee, the Sauk, the Fox and the Kickapoo.
