These nations were spread out over a vast territory south of lakes Huron, Michigan and
Erie. The Miami, who were divided into six tribes, had settled along the Wabash and Maumee
rivers; the Potawatomi, the Menominee, the Sauk and the Fox occupied the region west of
Lake Michigan, south of Green Bay; the Kickapoo lived along the southern part of Lake
Erie; the Shawnee inhabited the Ohio Valley; and the Illinois were divided among a dozen
villages on both banks of the Mississippi, between the Missouri and the Ohio.
