After the conclusion of the Great Peace of Montreal in 1701, the Iroquois in the area remained quiet for quite a while. Soon after the conclusion of the treaty, the French established garrisons at the Illinois and Lake Michigan posts. They reinforced their military positions because of the British presence in Ohio and for fear that their trade alliances with Indian peoples would crumble. The French also feared that the Fox, the only Algonquian people of the Great Lakes who openly opposed them, might pick up where their Iroquois allies had left off.
