Starting in 1680, the coureurs des bois invaded the heart of the continent and extended
the presence of the French past Green Bay (west of Lake Michigan). Numerous trading posts
were set up near Jesuit missions and Indian villages. To counter the expansion of trade
between the French and the southern Algonquians, the Iroquois multiplied their incursions
into the Lake Michigan region. The Miami, the Illinois and other nations in the area
refused to trade with them, which led to numerous conflicts and the resumption of the
Iroquois wars.
