In the early 17th century, the French and the Algonquin also became military allies. In
1609, 1610 and 1615, Champlain and a few Frenchmen took part in the wars between the
Montagnais and the Algonquin, and the Iroquois. After 1650, the economic and military
importance of some eastern Algonquian nations, such as the Montagnais, the Attikamek and
the Algonquin, declined, when the French trading network was extended west.
