The term Algonquian is used to designate a group of Indian nations that share a common language. When the Europeans arrived, the nations belonging to this linguistic family occupied a vast territory stretching from Newfoundland to the Rockies. In the New France era, the French maintained relations mainly with the Algonquians of northeastern North America: the Micmac, the Montagnais, the Algonquin, the Attikamek, the Nipissing, the Abenaki, the Ottawa and the Ojibway.
