The Micmac, the Montagnais and the Algonquin were among the first nations of the
Algonquian family to establish regular trade relations with the French. After the founding
of the first trading post at Tadoussac, in 1600, and of Quebec City, in 1608, the St.
Lawrence Valley became the centre of the French fur-trade network. In the first decades of
the 17th century, the Montagnais and the Algonquin played a key role in that network,
acting as intermediaries between the French and the Indian nations of the interior.
