Algonquian peoples living north of the Great Lakes, like the Ojibway and the Ottawa, then
joined the network, becoming valuable fur suppliers and important military allies. Even
though the trading network expanded west, the eastern Algonquian nations continued to
trade with the French. In the Maritimes, the Micmac and the Abenaki remained strategic
allies of the French in their battles against the British.
