Since the Iroquoians did not use fertilizer, their land was quickly depleted, so every 10 to 30 years they had to move to new areas and clear new land. The men cleared the land, but all the other work associated with the cultivation of crops was performed by the women, who prepared the fields in the spring, seeded them, tended them and harvested the crops.
