Contact between the northeastern Iroquoians and the French initially occurred in the early 16th century, when Jacques Cartier met the Iroquoians living in the St. Lawrence Valley. These first meetings did not lead to anything in the short term, however; after an unsuccessful attempt to found a colony in the St. Lawrence Valley, the French lost interest in Canada and did not consider it again for several decades.
