The term Iroquoian designates a group of Indian nations united by the common origin of their languages. The Huron-Wendat and the Iroquois are the best-known nations in the group, which included several others when the Europeans arrived. In the early 17th century, the Iroquoian nations were concentrated in the Great Lakes region, near lakes Huron, Ontario and Erie. Before that, there were also Iroquoians in the St. Lawrence Valley. Jacques Cartier met them in 1535-36, before they mysteriously disappeared in the second half of the 16th century.
