The Iroquoians cultivated several edible plants, including squash, beans, pumpkins,
sunflowers and corn, the latter being the basis of their diet. Corn accounted for over 60%
of the diet of the Huron-Wendat, for example. The agricultural techniques employed by the
Iroquoians gave good results and allowed them to accumulate surpluses, which they consumed
in years of bad harvests or used to trade with other nations.
