In the early 17th century, the French allied themselves with the Huron-Wendat, the
Montagnais and the Algonquin against the Iroquois. This engaged them in a conflict that,
although punctuated with truces of varying duration, lasted until the conclusion of the
Great Peace of Montreal in 1701. The treaty marked a turning point in relations between
the French and the Iroquois; from then on, the Iroquois remained neutral in conflicts
involving France and England in North America.
