Fishermen (carving)

CMC PCD 95-650-075

Gaspé region, Quebec; early 20th century; painted wood; 38 x 17.5 x 11 cm. CMC 77-733.1-7

This carving of fishermen with their catch piled around them was acquired in the Gaspé region. Two of the fish have nails partly driven into their mouths, with a fragment of twine attached, indicating that they may once have hung outside the boat. Perhaps originally a toy, the harsh simplicity of the carving and the stark colours capture a deep feeling for the fisherman's life.
