Royal Canadian Mounted Police stetson and turban, 1901-present
The national controversy in 1989-1990 about whether RCMP officers should be allowed to wear turbans for religious reasons shows that headwear can really make the news. The turban is now part of the official uniform of the RCMP. The blue turban corresponds to the forage cap for routine duties, and the brown turban is worn, like the stetson, for ceremonial events. Since 1974, women have been employed as uniformed officers.
