Creating the Dinner Service

The Artists

M. Louise Couen

The artist's Christian name is sometimes given as Louisa in newspaper reports and in WAAC records, and her surname has appeared as Conen, Cowen, Cohen and Cowan.

She had a studio at 251 Carlton Street in Toronto, where she taught china painting. She was sufficiently established to advertise her studio and teaching services in the 1894 City Directory.

WAAC records show changes of address within Toronto up until 1903, at which time all traces of the artist disappear.

Louise Couen painted six fish plates for the dinner service.
