Courtesy of the Women's Art Association of Canada, Toronto The first step towards establishing the Woman's Art Association came in 1886 when a group of women in Toronto organized a self-governing art society. In 1890, this group became the Women's Art Club, and in 1892 the Woman's Art Association of Canada. There were soon branches in many parts of Canada. Lady Aberdeen became its patron, and all the wives of the Governors General since that time have followed suit. The association was commonly referred to as the Women's Art Association of Canada (WAAC) and in 1912, when it was incorporated under federal legislation, that became the official name. |
