John Cabot

John Cabot sailed from Bristol, England, in the Matthew on May 2, 1497, under patent from King Henry VII of England to explore westwards across the Atlantic. He was also granted a trade monopoly on any new lands or routes to Asia that he might locate. Cabot landed somewhere between Labrador and Cape Sable, Nova Scotia on June 24, 1497. He explored these coasts and returned to England on August 6, 1497.
