By the late 1970s, both the downtown skyline and the farmers’ fields beyond the core of the city had been transformed. New bank towers and insurance companies reached high above the old buildings. The Ward, where so many immigrants had settled at the turn of the century, virtually disappeared as the new skyscrapers obliterated the sky above and the old tenements below.
