Nota: Il termine “tarantella” è legato al nome di un ragno, la tarantola, il cui morso secondo antiche credenze scatenava violente crisi psicomotorie. I movimenti tipici di questa danza popolare riproducono infatti quelli attribuiti al morso di questo ragno. Il ballo, accompagnato di solito dal suono di tamburelli a sonagli, serviva dunque a far uscire il tarantolato dallo stato di delirio in cui si trovava.

Note : The word “tarantella” is related to the name of a spider: the tarantula. According to ancient belief, the bite of the tarantula caused violent emotional and physical reactions. The typical movements of this popular dance mimic the reactions of those bitten by a tarantula. The dance, generally accompanied by tambourines and shakers, was performed to help the victims of the spider bite return to their normal physical and mental state.
