Nota: Ecco una testimonianza della tristezza con cui gli emigranti vivevano il distacco dalla terra natale e il senso di incertezza per il loro futuro. Questa famosissima ballata è un esempio di adattamento al tema dell'emigrazione di un canto più antico. Nell'originale si raccontava la fine di una ragazza che per amore aveva lasciato la casa contro la volontà materna; qui invece si narrano le peripezie di un giovane emigrante che, abbandonata la sua casa senza il permesso della madre, muore nel naufragio del bastimento.
