King Uzziah's epitaph.
Jerusalem
Circa 1st century BCE
Marble
Israel Museum, Jerusalem Collection

When Uzziah died, in the 8th century BCE, the leprous king was buried outside of Jerusalem. This plaque was placed to indicate the new site of his remains, which were shifted when Jerusalem was expanded under King Herod. It is a valuable non-Biblical reference to the existence of a king in David's line

The plaque reads: "To this place were brought the bones of Uzziah, the king of Judah-do not open!"
