The style and decoration of this bow are Thérèse Girard's unique design. A striking feature is the superb silverwork on the nut and the adjusting screw.

A trained violist, Thérèse Girard apprenticed as a luthier under Jules Saint-Michel in Montreal. She trained for three years in his workshop, where she made her first violin. In 1980, she received a Canada Council grant to attend the four-year program at the international school of stringed-instrument making in Cremona, Italy. There, she learned to make instruments of the violin family, including baroque instruments, and studied restoration, the production and application of varnishes, the history of stringed-instrument making, and the different schools of luthiers. While in Italy, she also took a two-year course in bow making. In addition to making and restoring modern and baroque bows, Thérèse Girard specializes in the engraving of nuts and screws, a technique learned from a master jeweller. After returning to Montreal in 1984, she opened a workshop, where she collaborates with Jean-Benoît Stensland. Their clients include professional musicians, soloists and advanced students in various orchestras and faculties of music in the Montreal area and beyond.
