1909 manuscript
On the left is the original manuscript of the T.W.E. Sowter 1909 publication "Algonkin and Huron Occupation of the Ottawa Valley" and on the right is the published version of that article.  With a steady hand and a clear mind, Sowter wrote out a text in which he attempted to relate the human history of the Ottawa Valley as he understood it to have taken place, based on his archaeological discoveries.  He had no local references to use and so he looked to southern Ontario for comparative materials.  Today, some of his conclusions, especially as regards the ethnic identification of the occupants of the Valley are generally not accepted.  However, his observations concerning the similarities between his materials and those from the southwest of Ontario remain valid today; the differences lie in our interpretations of these resemblances.
