Zentkala (Little Bird/ Willie Harold Thomson)

1906-1988

Willie Thomson, the son of Iha Wastewin and James Thomson, was born at Wood Mountain. Riding came natural to Willie as did gentling horses.
As a young man he worked for many different ranchers at Wood Mountain. In 1928  he married Ida Mergel and they rented several different places before   acquiring their own land.
Willie was a craftsman, making his own ropes, horsehair haltars, and hackamores. He was also inventive. A fork tine became a lether punch; an old boot top became a staple bag. Everything was recyled and put to good use on his ranch. More than anything Willie liked to break horses, especially roping horses. He had a special relationship with

his horses and when he called them they each knew their own name.
For many years Willie worked as a chute man at the Wood Mountain Stampede. He was a willing worker and no one enjoyed the job more than Willie.
Willie played the violin at many dances and house parties with family and friends in apick-up orchestra. He was a quiet man who never refused a helping hand to a neighbour. Over the years he was called on to help break many unruly horses.
Willie and Ida had two sons, Billy and Harold.
