Nupa Kikte
(Kills Twice - Big Joe)

1868-1952

Nupa Kikte was eight years old at the time of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He was too young to fight in the battle but he held the warriors' horses. When he was sixteen he fought with the Metis at Batoche and fulfilled his dream of becoming a warrior.
He was part of the Lakota camp at Moose Jaw and in the 1880's he married Pte Sanwin. At Moose Jaw they had a family of ten children. All of the children except three died of smallpox and were buried near Moose Jaw. Nupa Kikte and Pte Sanwin with three children Najinyapi (Bill), Ihantla (George), and Hupahuwin (Ida) moved to the reserve in 1911. In 1920 another daughter Tasunke Wanyankapawin (Lisa) was born.
Nupa Kikte was well known to everyone in the community. He worked for many different ranchers and he always took part in the parades and pow-wows at the rodeo. He was a very sociable person and had many friends. After Cante Ohitika died, he acted as chief on the reserve until the time of his death.
