This flag represents the Women’s Social and Political Union, founded in Britain in 1903. One of the founders reputedly gave it to Canadian-born suffragette Mary Richardson at a political rally. While certain women were allowed to vote the year before, women gained the unrestricted right to vote in federal elections on May 24, 1918.
