a large, French-Canadian family.
1915
The family is impoverished by her father's
unemployment.
1929
Embarks on a career as a teacher.
1937
Goes to Europe and begins to write.
1939
Returns to Canada and works as a journalist
in Montreal.
1945
At 36, publishes Bonheur d'occasion (translated as The Tin Flute in 1947).
1947
Marries Marcel Carbotte and moves to Paris.
1950
Returns to Quebec City and over the next three
decades produces many major works.
1983
Dies on July 13 in Quebec City.
