Participates in a Spanish expedition to Mexico and
the West Indies.

Travels to New France, explores the St. Lawrence
River as far upstream as the present site of Montreal.

Participates in the French settlements at
Sainte-Croix (in present-day Maine) and
Port Royal (in present-day Nova Scotia).
Maps the Atlantic Coast from Cape Breton
Island to Cape Cod.
1608–1611
Founds a settlement at Quebec City and travels
down the Richelieu River to Lake Champlain.

Marries Hélène Boullé.
1615–1616
On his final journey of exploration, travels west to Huronia, Georgian Bay (in present-day Ontario).
1627
Cardinal Richelieu, First Minister to Louis XIII, names Champlain Commander of New France.
1629–1633
Quebec falls into the hands of the English. Exiled, Champlain does not return to Quebec City until 1633.
1635
Dies on December 25 in Quebec City.
