On a still, spring evening in the early nineteenth century a Coast Salish family in their travelling canoe, a s.tiwátl, glides along the southeast coast of Lopez Island. Rolled cat-tail mats and baskets of provisions are their cargo. Across Rosario Strait, Mount Baker looms in the evening sunlight.
