Wish upon a star or two

Gatineau, Quebec, June 28, 2007 — Celebrate Tanabata, the Japanese Star Festival, at the Canadian Children’s Museum on Saturday, July 7 and Sunday, July 8. You can take part in a traditional Tanabata custom by writing your wishes on tanzaku –– colourful, small strips of paper –– and then hanging them on bamboo trees in hopes that your dreams will come true.

Tanabata is celebrated in Japan every year on the seventh day of the seventh month. According to the legend, that’s the day when the two stars Altair and Vega, usually separated by the Milky Way, are able to meet.

The Japanese hold colourful Tanabata festivals across the country every summer, festooning the streets with large banners and celebrating with decoration competitions, parades and games.
