Whatever Happened to the Nurse’s Uniform?

Christina Bates, the Museum’s Curator of Ontario History, brings her expertise in costume, dress history, fashion, and women’s history—from the baroque era to the present—to this discussion on nurse uniforms. Bates has worked on virtually every aspect of nurses’ uniforms, curated a 2005 exhibition on nurses’ uniforms, and has published and presented widely on the topic.

Do you ever long for the days when people carried parasols, hands were kissed, and people used beautiful, flowery speech in everyday life? Journey back to a gentler time, and create your own unique Victorian-inspired headpiece or jewelry. You can even pose for a silhouette portrait: a popular nineteenth-century pastime. Period styles are all the rage on the runway, so why not join us on our very own Victorian streetscape and get crafty! Fee: $12; $10 for Museum Members—materials included.
