An Absent Presence: Atrocity in Canada’s Official First World War Photographs

Historian Laura Brandon examines four of Canada’s approximately 8,000 official First World War photographs for subtle symbols of wartime atrocity. Although the images show no obvious signs of violence, by reworking the meaning of hundreds of widely available photographs of ruins, broken trees, churches, and cemeteries, the authorities were able to give a public presence to atrocity in the face of its absence from the official photographic record.
