Indonesia Kolintang Ensemble
Gatineau, Quebec, May 1, 2007 — In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, join us at the Canadian Museum of Civilization on Saturday, May 5 for a special presentation by the Kolintang Ensemble. The group, comprised of staff from the Embassy of Indonesia, will play Indonesian folk and popular songs as well as other music familiar to the Canadian public.The kolintang instrument originated in Minahasa in the northern part of Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is made of light, solid indigenous wood. Originally, the kolintang was used in ancestor worship rituals and was nearly extinct for about a century. It reappeared after World War II when a blind musician reconstructed it according to Western musical scales.
